Position description

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2019. We seek an individual who will strengthen our research and educational programs in the area of fluid dynamics. Candidates should be capable of teaching core fluid dynamics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate should have credentials in one of three areas of research: (i) Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) and/ or Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows; (ii) Experiments on Unsteady Flows and Unsteady Aerodynamics; and (iii) Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization. The LES/ DNS research should include either reacting or non-reacting and single-phase or multiphase. The experimental analysis should include the most advanced non-intrusive diagnostics. The MDO research should bring together fluid dynamics with advanced systems analysis. In each of the three areas, desirable research interests include physics-based modelling at multi-levels of fidelity; data-driven analysis and related post-processing for computational and/or experimental results; and applications to vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles, unmanned air vehicles, and/ or aerodynamic flows at intermediate Reynolds numbers.

The position will be at the Assistant Professor rank. Applicants should have a doctorate from an accredited university in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The successful candidate should maintain a strong publication record, develop a vigorous externally funded research program, recruit and supervise graduate students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute their leadership, collaboration, and innovative thinking toward an excellent fluid dynamics program within the department and the university and to the engineering profession. Successful candidates will also be expected to contribute toward increasing the number of students (especially underrepresented minority students) pursuing graduate degrees in related programs. Information about the Department is given at the website: http://engineering.uci.edu/dept/mae.

Applications should include a cover letter; a description of research, teaching, and service interests, including ability to contribute to departmental and interdisciplinary programs; a curriculum vitae; a separate statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion; and the names and contact information of at least four references. References will not be contacted until a later stage of consideration, after consultation with the candidate.

Applications received by January 15, 2019 are assured full consideration, but the search will continue until the position is filled. Applications should be submitted electronically at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF04985.
