Position description

The Department of Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a faculty position to consolidate the Newkirk Center for Science & Society’s partial acquisition of the National Registry of Exonerations (NRE), an internationally recognized archival, research, and public information project whose mission is to provide comprehensive information on all known exonerations of innocent criminal defendants in the United States, from 1989 through the present, in order to learn from past mistakes and prevent future wrongful convictions and social injustice.

We seek a scholar with research expertise in interdisciplinary scholarship on the role of race, ethnicity, economic status, and other extralegal factors in criminal investigations, trials, and the administration of justice. This scholar’s research will apply empirical methodology to legal issues, such as identifying predictors of false convictions and understanding prosecutorial decision-making. Their research will be grounded in the disciplines of Law; Criminology, Law & Society; and/or Psychology, and they will serve as Co-editors of the NRE in additional to normal faculty duties. Evidence of success in securing extramural funding to support research and graduate students is desired. Rank is open.

To ensure your application is given full consideration, files should be completed by January 1, 2019. Priority will be given to applications received by that date; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in a field related to Criminology or Law and Society. The position will begin July 1, 2019 (teaching duties will begin Fall 2019).

Applications must be uploaded electronically through the on-line Recruit system: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF05006

Candidates should submit a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching interests, representative publications, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation uploaded electronically. A separate statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity,
equity and inclusion (e.g. mentoring activities, committee service, research or teaching activities) is also required.

Please direct questions about this position to the chair of the search committee, Professor Simon Cole (scole@uci.edu).
