Position description

ACADEMIC COORDINATOR I

The Center for Environmental Biology (CEB) and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) in the School of Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine (UCI), invites applications for an Academic Coordinator to facilitate the implementation and operation of two new graduate education programs; the Masters in Conservation and Restoration Science (MCRS) and the Ridge-to-Reef (R2R) Graduate Training Incubator. Both programs focus on enhancing the professional skill set of graduate students and connecting academic research to practitioners and societally relevant issues. The MCRS is a professional masters program focused on providing recent graduates and professionals returning to academia with the skills and knowledge base to hold leadership and management positions in environmental fields related to conservation, restoration, and sustainability. R2R is funded by a National Science Foundation Research Training (NRT) grant to promote professional skills and stakeholder-driven scholarship among graduate students. Both programs focus on providing career paths whereby excellent research is placed into action through non-profit, agency, or business actors working in teams with academia, or through effective translation of knowledge to decision- and policy-makers.

The successful applicant will help implement educational elements in the MCRS and R2R programs and provide assistance in engaging community partners, including California State Parks, Irvine Ranch Conservancy, Natural Communities Coalition, Orange County Parks, Irvine Ranch Water District, and Back Bay Science Center. The Coordinator will act as a student advocate and interface with faculty, staff, and an external evaluator to enhance student success. The Coordinator will assist with CEB’s successful student internship program, in which students receive pedagogical training and participate in K-12 and after-school science education programs. The Coordinator will work to integrate MCRS and R2R activities into UCI field sites, including the Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center, the San Joaquin Marsh, and the Burns-Pinyon Ridge Reserve. Specific duties will include interfacing with students, organizing meetings, assisting with project finances, coordinating logistics for program elements, and developing communications, advertising, and website materials. The Coordinator will oversee staffing and planning for recruitment efforts on and off-campus and serve as a liaison with internship partners. Duties also include attending an annual program meeting in the Washington-DC area and contributing substantially to the writing of annual progress reports.

REQUIREMENTS: Masters degree (PhD Preferred) in the environmental sciences, ecology, education, or a related field, plus 2-3 additional years of pedagogical training, formal or informal science education, or engagement / outreach experience. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Review of applications will begin on January 4, 2019 and the recruitment will remain open until filled. Qualified candidates should send a cover letter, C.V. and the names of three references to the following on-line recruitment URL to submit the material requested:
