Position description

Job Description
The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow. This an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the UCI Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease (MODEL-AD) Disease Modeling Project (DMP). MODEL-AD is a NIA/NIH-funded multi-project, multi-institutional grant whose goal is to produce the next generation of mouse models for late-onset AD and develop new therapeutic targets. The current position will characterize these new models using novel morphological derived metrics of the cerebrovasculature. Specifically, the candidate will use a novel vessel painting method to explore the morphological complexities of cerebral vessels in novel AD mouse models. Functional blood flow studies will complement the morphological assessments. New approaches to clarify these tissues for light sheet microscopy are anticipate to provide unprecedented views of the mouse brain vasculature. Under the direction of Andre Obenaus, Professor and Director of the UCI Preclinical and Translational Imaging Center (PTIC), the successful applicant will be responsible for acquisition, analysis and interpretation of vascular metric derived data in improved mouse models of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The project involves use of contemporary methods of vessel painting data acquisition, optimization of new and existing analysis pipelines and integration of these data with the MODEL-AD members. Responsibilities also include supervision of scientific research assistant(s) and student research assistant(s), as needed.

Requirements
Candidates with a doctoral degree in Neuroscience or related degree is required. Individuals with a minimum of 6 years experience in neuroscience and/or vascular biology are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in: in vivo and ex vivo MR acquisition, laser scanning imaging, optical vascular imaging methods, immunohistochemistry and histology, animal handling particularly anesthesia methods, imaging and histology analysis methods. Knowledge of brain regions affected by Alzheimer’s disease and its etiology is helpful. Ability to undertake histological and immunocytochemical protocols and the ability to co-register these to MRI or other imaging datasets will also be a strength. Eligible candidates should also have experience in Linux (Mac) and Windows software, use of spreadsheets and graphing software, database use and management, and strong record keeping skills. Excellent supervisory skills, the ability to work independently, including setting team and personal goals and meeting deadlines and strong communication skills are essential.
