The University of California, Irvine (UCI), School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Neurology. The Chair of Neurology reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and is responsible for the effective management of all administrative and operational processes of the department, providing not only comprehensive, interactive clinical services, but also supporting the teaching, educational, and research missions of the department, school, and University. The new Chair will build on the success of prior leadership, leveraging the talents of a diverse faculty, staff, and students, to chart continued success and increased national and international reputation of the department’s important academic and clinical endeavors.
The Department of Neurology is committed to advancing clinical care, education, and research to help patients with diverse neurological conditions. The department’s 40 full-time teaching faculty members are highly-experienced clinicians and researchers who are devoted to training the next generation of neurologists.
With world-class specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care, UC Irvine has established multidisciplinary programs in stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, and neuro-oncology. The department also participates in leading-edge bench to bedside research including: devising methods to predict and improve functional recovery after stroke; mapping white matter tracts in epilepsy, seeking ways to promote healthy brain aging and novel treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; understanding the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis; delineating novel molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration; developing new treatments for brain malignancies and developing stem cell therapies for neurological disorders. The next Chair will foster a stronger linkage with the broader UCI Neuroscience community including The UC Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND), the Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC).

UCI seeks a Chair who will maintain and enhance the success of the department while driving innovation in the field more broadly. Qualified candidates will have earned an MD or MD/PhD (or equivalent) and be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), be eligible for appointment as an associate or full professor in the Clinical X, HS Clinical or Professor series, and be eligible for (or currently hold) a medical license in the state of California.
