Position description

The Coastal Dynamics Laboratory at UC Irvine is seeking an experienced researcher to investigate offshore macroalgal cultivation and the influence of aquaculture on coastal ecosystems. Heightened demand for macroalgae and derived products requires innovation in design and new solutions to support its sustainable cultivation in the ocean. The successful candidate will work with a team of researchers to develop a macroalgal growth model that accounts for hydrodynamically-mediated biological processes like the enhancement of nutrient uptake due to turbulence within canopy flows, plant motion, and waves. The macroalgal growth model will be an important part of a larger modeling system that will be used for locating optimal farm sites, evaluating farm designs for structural soundness under rough ocean conditions, assessing new macroalgal cultivation techniques and operational procedures to maximize productivity, and for predicting the influence of cultivation on coastal ecosystems.

Qualifications: Organizational and communication skills, creativity in methodological development, and an understanding of basic experimental design and statistical analyses are required for this position. The ability to work in a group setting is essential, as the candidate will work collaboratively with other PIs, post docs, graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, marine science, ecology, or a related field from an accredited university. The preferred candidate will have experience in fluid dynamics, ecology, and would have some numerical modeling experience, as well as the demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed manuscripts.

The Associate Specialist will work with Professor Kristen Davis (http://davis.eng.uci.edu/) and her research group. Initial appointment will be for a 12-month period, renewable subject to performance and funding availability. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publications, and contact information for three references. Apply by submitting your application to our online RECRUIT system at: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF05633
