Description:
The Institute for Interdisciplinary Salivary Bioscience Research (IISBR) at the University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar in the area of the translational clinical neuroscience and biomarker discovery.

Research Areas:
Research projects at the IISBR include identification of disease biomarkers that can be measured in saliva from patients with neurodegenerative and psychiatric conditions. Specific to this position are studies that will investigate the utility of saliva as a biofluid to monitor lithium levels in individuals currently taking lithium medications to treat psychiatric disorders. Lithium levels will be measured in both blood and saliva from individuals with bipolar disorder and additional studies would identify factors that may affect lithium distribution throughout body. Another project will focus on identifying salivary biomarkers for Huntington’s disease, a genetic, progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by a mutation in the disease protein, huntingtin. Additional studies will measure huntingtin protein fragments in saliva and blood from patients with Huntington’s disease.

Requirements:
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. degree, with background in pharmacology, psychiatry, neuroscience, genetics, or a related field. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong laboratory skills, independence and resourcefulness. Must possess strong communication skills, excellent organizational skills. Experience in Western blotting and immunoassay techniques is advantageous. Salaries are based on University of California salary scales, which are dependent on academic rank and step, and commensurate with experience.
