Job Description:
The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for Junior Specialist in the labs of Dr. Mathew Blurton-Jones and Dr. Hayk Davtyan. The mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out independent research under the joint supervision of the PIs. Primary duties will include immunohistochemical staining and confocal microscopy, animal husbandry, genotyping and mouse colony maintenance, and small animal surgery.

Requirements:
Successful candidates must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related life science area. We are especially interested in applicants with experience and proficiency in the following areas:

1 Immunofluorescent labeling of brain sections and confocal imaging.
2 Maintenance, genotyping, and husbandry of transgenic mouse colonies.
3 Small animal surgery and euthanasia.
4 Familiarity with basic molecular and biochemical techniques (qPCR, Western blotting).
5 Prior experience with Alzheimer’s Disease research is a plus.

Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential. Evidence of prior successful research experience in a neuroscience lab would be a plus. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
