Position description

The University of California, Irvine, Department of Dance part-time lecturer in Jazz Dance. The successful candidate may be required to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, dance majors and/or non-majors. The successful candidate is required to have an M.F.A. or equivalent level of professional experience enabling them to teach advanced levels of dance techniques within UCI's program. Knowledge of more than one of the following forms or approaches is required: African-American vernacular dance, Matt Mattox, Luigi, Dunham-jazz, musical theatre, hip-hop, African or Afro-Latin informed approaches. The University of California, Irvine is committed to teaching principles of jazz that elevate its musicality, root forms, and relationship to music.

Basic qualifications: M.F.A./M.A. in dance, or professional experience in the field. Teaching experience required (may include; college, university, private studio, or other professional teaching). Knowledge of more than one of the following forms or approaches is required: African-American vernacular dance, Matt Mattox, Luigi, Dunham-jazz, musical theatre, hip-hop, African or Afro-Latin informed approaches.

Preferred qualifications: M.F.A. in dance, more than one year of university level teaching experience, professional dance experience.

Compensation will be based off of the Full time annual rate of $56,381 to $59,764 at a part time percentage, contingent upon available funding, instructional need and experience.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Dance at the University of California, Irvine enrolls 165 undergraduate dance majors and 20 graduate students in B.A., B.F.A., and M.F.A. degrees in Dance. The department, with 15 full-time and several part-time faculty, has been recognized as one of the nation’s outstanding dance programs. UCI alumni have danced with professional dance companies, in film and television, on Broadway, in national tours, and are employed as university dance faculty nationwide and internationally. The department’s facilities include six dance studios, a motion capture studio, and a Dancer Wellness/ Pilates Suite. Students perform in three theatres (including an Experimental Media Performance Lab) and participate in collaborative telematic projects.
