Postdoctoral Research Associate
Position description
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is looking for a postdoctoral research associate interested in a research project examining potential drivers of wildfire regime changes in Amazonia and Cerrado and drought-related effects on forest ecophysiology. The project focuses on analyzing how regional patterns of fire activity varies as a function of droughts, agriculture intensification, and environmental policies. The project will involve statistical analysis, remote sensing imagery, and spatial modeling. The project benefits from collaborations within our research group and with scientists at the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) and Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM). The term of appointment is for one year, and may be renewable for another year depending on satisfactory progress.
A Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences/Ecology or other related fields is required. A strong foundational background in ecological statistics is recommended. Well-qualified candidates will be knowledgeable about tropical wildfires, land-use change dynamics, plant water stress, and climate projections (e.g., working with CMIP5 model outputs). Computational fluency is a plus for this position, as well as for candidates who are comfortable in dealing with large data sets. Responsibilities will include analyzing datasets, presenting results at a major international conference (e.g., AGU), leading hypothesis-driven publications (preferentially containing the main findings of the study).
The Earth System Science Department at UC Irvine is a highly interdisciplinary environment comprising ~ 25 faculty with expertise across many components of the Earth System, including atmospheric and climate dynamics, land surface processes, terrestrial and marine biogeochemical cycles, ice sheets, and human systems.
