Position description

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is looking for a self-motivated and qualified post-doctoral researcher to work on a collaborative, multi-benefit valuation project aimed at enhancing carbon storage in California’s natural lands. The candidate is expected to undertake spatial modeling and dynamic analysis to estimate the supply and value of ecosystem services, using GIS-based and statistical software and modeling platforms such as ArcGIS, R and InVEST. The individual should be self-motivated and have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent scientific research. Familiarity with various ecosystem-service valuation methods and land-use planning techniques is expected. As part of a multi-campus team, the post doctoral researcher will participate in workshops and research activities that support the Innovation Center for Advancing Ecosystem Climate Solutions The candidate is expected to:

  1. Conduct reviews of the literature in forest resource management and carbon storage, economic valuation, and ecosystem services
  2. Produce maps of ecosystem services in the study area in California
  3. Carry out economic valuation analysis for various ecosystem services with market value and non-market values
  4. Map beneficiaries of ecosystem services at different scales
  5. Prepare peer reviewed publications.
  6. Present outcomes of research in various stakeholder workshops and conferences

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a Ph.D or equivalent in Economics , Environmental Economics , Ecology, Environmental Science or a related field. Qualified candidates must have obtained their PhD degree prior to beginning employment.

Experience with relevant forest-management research, interdisciplinary projects, and ecosystem-service research is highly desired. Experience implementing real-options methodology will be an added advantage. Applicants must either have obtained a doctoral degree in Economics, environmental economics, Ecology, Environmental science or a related field. Advanced knowledge of GIS and spatial analysis is expected as well as strong written and verbal English communication skills.

The position is based in Irvine, CA and will commence immediately once the candidate has been identified, and it will continue for 12 months, with potential for a one-year renewable contract.

The Earth System Science Department at UC Irvine is a highly interdisciplinary environment comprising ~ 25 faculty with expertise across many components of the Earth System, including atmospheric and climate dynamics, land surface processes, terrestrial and marine biogeochemical cycles, ice sheets, and human systems.
