Position description

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in the School of Biological Sciences is accepting applications in the areas of adaptive or innate immunology and neuroinflammation in relationship to Alzheimer’s disease. The person in the position will perform experiments with human brain samples cultured neurons and transgenic mice under the direction of Dr. Charles Glabe. This NIH-funded project examines natural antibodies (NA) and autoantibodies (AA) that are correlated with the incidence or avoidance of Alzheimer’s disease and the pathological significance of the immune response to amyloid. The overarching hypothesis is that the immune response to amyloid is similar to the immune response to microbial pathogens, where NA are produced by a T cell independent immune response and forms first response to the formation of amyloids. We hypothesize that NA and AA are associated with protection against AD and may serve as biomarkers of AD. This person also will work on the role of inflammatory cell death pathways in the pathogenesis of AD. Renewal of the appointment will be contingent on performance and the availability of adequate funding.

The University of California, Irvine is ranked among the nation’s best research institutes with over $90,000,000 in current funding.
