The University of California, Irvine (UCI) has an immediate job opening at CERN for an applied physicist or computer/software engineer to work on the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer. The initial assignment is to play a leading role in recommissioning and operations of the CSC (cathode strip chambers) and in development at the interface between the NSW (new small wheel) detector readout and ATLAS trigger and data acquisition, with possible future work in NSW commissioning and/or ATLAS DAQ/HLT (data acquisition and high-level trigger).
The UCI group, consisting of Professors Andrew Lankford, Anyes Taffard, and Daniel Whiteson, has been a member of the ATLAS collaboration since 1994 and is actively engaged in the Muon Spectrometer, the Trigger and Data Acquisition System, and Soft-ware and Computing.
The applicant should have, or be about to gain, a Ph.D. in particle physics, and is ex-pected to have experience from at least two years of active participation in a leading international particle physics experiment. The applicant should have expertise in electronics and/or data acquisition. Appointment will be as Project Scientist with rank and salary to be commensurate with experience. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable upon satisfactory performance and continuing availability of funds. Work will be primarily performed at CERN and will require occasional travel to UCI and collaborating institutions.
