Academic Coordinator, School of Biological Sciences Laboratory Courses
• Supervise all personnel in the Biological Sciences Teaching Support Group. This group functions in support of all undergraduate laboratory courses taught in the School of Biological Sciences. Their duties include the support of instruction of many of the School’s laboratory courses. Personnel currently supervised by the Academic Coordinator are:
I. two full time employees at SRA IV level
II one full time employee at SRA JII level
III. two full time employees at SRA II level
IV. one part-time employee at Lab Assistant I level
Future positions: It is expected that the staff of the Teaching Support Group, under the supervision of the Academic Coordinator, will increase in size in forthcoming academic years to accommodate increased undergraduate enrollment within the School of Biological Sciences, as well as the incorporation of new laboratory courses related to Nursing, Public Health, and Pharmaceutical Sciences programs.
• Interact with the Faculty Director of the School Undergraduate Laboratories on issues concerning personnel of the Teaching Support Group, including hiring and performance evaluations.
• Interact with the Faculty Director of the School Undergraduate Laboratories on issues relating to course policies and administration, teaching assistants, and undergraduate students.
Specific Duties of the Academic Coordinator and Staff:
The Academic Coordinator serve as a coordinator for one or more courses taught in the School. In this capacity, the Academic Coordinator performs administrative and academic duties such as scheduling, running workshops for the TAs. Operational and support duties: include setting out supplies and equipment for each of the Lab exercises, making media and/or solutions, maintenance of live specimens (i.e. bacteria, viruses, fungi, goldfish, plants, sea urchins, rats, cockroaches, chick embryos) and disposal of biological and biochemical waste.
Oversee ordering of supplies, reagents, and equipment used in teaching all la b courses in the School.
Oversee maintenance of all equipment used in teaching undergraduate lab courses in the School. This includes making decisions concerning the rules and regulations for using the equipment in each course.
Oversee maintenance of all facilities used in teaching undergraduate lab courses in the School. This includes the teaching laboratories, prep rooms, warm rooms, cold rooms, and storage facilities.
Scientific Background Required for the Position:
The position of Academic Coordinator will need significant knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, mycology and virology. Specific education and training in these areas, and/or extensive experience in the administration and teaching of laboratories at the undergraduate college/ university level is required.
Salary is commensurate with relevant experience and track record.
