One full-time postdoctoral scholar is needed at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The responsibilities position will be split evenly between two efforts: one project in the School of Education examining transfer and cross-enrollment among community college students (described in the next paragraph), and work on a variety of projects through an interdisciplinary campus-wide center – the Education Research Initiative (ERI) – that examine teaching and learning in a variety of higher education contexts. The postdoctoral scholar will be affiliated with both UCI’s School of Education and with ERI. This is a two-year position with a proposed start date of July 1, 2020 (negotiable).
50% of the postdoctoral fellow’s effort will be allocated to support a five-year NSF funded project that aims to improve the transition of community college students into four-year university programs through increased access to cross-enrollment programs. The postdoctoral scholar will lead the implementation of a randomized intervention at three local community colleges. In addition, he or she will join a project team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates conducting a range of qualitative and quantitative studies that examine how students in community colleges make decisions about course taking and transfer. Activities will include assisting with designing and implementing research projects, collaborating and communicating with the three partner community colleges, seeking human subjects research approval, analyzing data, writing up results for publications and presentations, and documenting and sharing information about the project with the partner schools.
50% of the postdoctoral scholar’s effort will be allocated to support the work of ERI. ERI is a newly funded initiative bringing together researchers across the campus who are interested in conducting education research and implementing findings from this research. ERI is led by a team of STEM and education faculty, and currently consists of a team of faculty researchers, 2 postdoctoral scholars, a graduate student researcher, and support staff. The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate with UCI faculty, postdocs, and graduate students on ERI projects. Examples of these projects include evaluating the effectiveness of UCI’s new active learning classroom building, characterizing campus culture to identify reasons why students leave STEM programs, and determining the impact of teaching-focused faculty across the UC system. Activities will include assisting with designing and implementing research projects, seeking human subjects research approval, developing funding proposals, analyzing data, writing up results for publications and presentations, organizing outreach activities to campus faculty about conducting teaching and learning research, and documenting and sharing information about teaching and learning research on campus.
Position will begin summer 2020 (exact date negotiable) for two years.
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Economics or a related field by the start date of the position; prior expertise in leading research projects; expertise in research design and methodology; outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English; a successful record of publication and presentations; and the ability to work well with diverse teams. Desirable qualifications include experience with research in higher education settings and grant writing.
