Postdoctoral Scholars – Interfacial science of complex concentrated materials
Position description
Postdoctoral Scholars – Interfacial science of complex concentrated materials
The University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for 2 postdoctoral scholars to join an Interdisciplinary Research Group, located within the newly formed UCI-MRSEC Center for Complex and Active Materials, which is developing the interfacial science of complex concentrated materials (CCMs). These materials are sometimes termed high entropy alloys and ceramics. One opening has a focus on experimental research within the characterization and processing spaces, while the other is seeking a computational materials scientist with a background in both machine learning techniques and materials science research. Candidates will have an invaluable opportunity to work with and be co-mentored by several leading faculty in the field. Consideration of candidates will begin immediately, and the positions will remain open until filled.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced Characterization and Processing:
The research will focus on the synthesis, processing, and characterization of metal and ceramic complex concentrated materials, with a particular emphasis on controlling and quantifying interfacial structure and the resultant microstructure. An individual with a strong background in advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and materials synthesis/processing is preferred. A Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field is required.
Computational Materials Science and Machine Learning:
The research will focus on the application of machine learning and data science techniques to both computational materials science data (e.g., development of surrogate models for property predictions and machine learning interatomic potentials), as well as electron microscopy techniques (e.g., automation of data acquisition, image processing, and classification). An individual with a strong background in computational materials science, condensed matter physics, and/or computer science is preferred. Experience in data science and programming would be major pluses. A Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or related fields is required.
Required Documents:
• Curriculum Vitae - Your most recently updated C.V.
• Cover Letter - Outlining your interests and relevant skills and experience
Optional Documents:
• Computational Materials Science and Machine Learning Position - A sample of a recent code written by the candidate, either as a plain text file or a URL to a publicly accessible repository, would be very helpful to the evaluation committee.
