The Humanities Core Program is seeking applicants for part-time lecturer positions to teach courses during the 2021–2022 academic year. The Humanities Core Program at UC Irvine introduces students to the methods and objectives of humanistic inquiry by example and through practice. In lectures, senate faculty from a wide range of disciplines demonstrate the way humanistic scholars approach issues from three general perspectives: cultural, historical, and philosophical. Our lecturing faculty use these perspectives to analyze and interpret many different kinds of primary and secondary sources that speak to a shared topic; in 2021–22, we will continue to explore the theme of Animals, People, and Power. We seek part-time lecturers to lead small seminar sections in which students practice these analytic methodologies through classroom conversations and debates. Seminar instructors also guide students through a yearlong writing curriculum that includes numerous expository essays and a multimodal website, culminating in a capstone research project. These activities are designed to engage students intellectually and to scaffold their development into interdisciplinary researchers as they examine the topic of the course throughout the year.
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in a humanities discipline. Priority will be given to those with 3+ years of university teaching. Knowledge of Humanities Core and experience teaching composition are also preferred. Please address in your materials how you would approach teaching writing, undergraduate research, and methodologies from multiple humanities disciplines in a small seminar setting and as part of collaborative pedagogical community.
Applicants should submit 1) a letter of interest that focuses on your teaching qualifications, 2) a current curriculum vitae, 3) two names and contact information for references, including a reference who has observed your teaching 4) current teaching evaluations, 5) a sample lesson plan for a small seminar-style class period (limit 5 pages total), and 6) Statement of Contributions to Diversity.
Submit materials via UC Irvine's online application system, RECRUIT, located at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF06568.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled, but those submitted by 3/15/21 will receive full consideration.
