Position description

The Criminology, Law, and Society Department at University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar position. The successful applicant will collaborate with the Prison Violence Consortium on research related to the causes and consequences of prison violence. The Prison Violence Consortium is a partnership between seven state prison systems and correctional experts to create a framework for reducing and preventing incidents of prison violence. Prison Violence Consortium members include the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, Colorado Department of Corrections, Massachusetts Department of Correction, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Oregon Department Corrections, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, and Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with Dr. Nancy Rodriguez (PI), a research team, and the Prison Violence Consortium on a grant funded project dedicated to expanding the evidence base on prison violence. The postdoctoral scholar will play a key role in developing knowledge into the situations and contexts under which prison violence unfolds, as well as the various individual, institutional and system-level factors that increase the likelihood of violence. The research will inform policymakers and corrections administrators about effective and cost-efficient approaches to managing and reducing violence in prisons.

We are seeking a highly-motivated individual with quantitative experience in various types of longitudinal data analysis and/or qualitative methods. Travel to state prison systems to support the research process (e.g., conduct interviews with incarcerated persons, staff, and behavioral health professionals) will be an integral part of the postdoctoral scholar’s duties. Experience conducting research with justice-involved individuals is preferred.

Required qualifications:
• Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the fields of criminology, psychology, or a related field.
• Strong skills in data management and longitudinal data analysis.

Other considerations:
• Excellent scientific writing and spoken English skills.
• Strong skills in qualitative methods.
• Outstanding individual initiative.
• Publications in academic journals.
• Strong organizational and managerial skills.

Application materials:
To ensure your application is given full consideration, files should be completed by April 30, 2021. Priority will be given to applications received by that date; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

• Please send a CV, cover letter, and names of 3 references that can provide letters of recommendation upon request. The position is a one-year appointment with the possibility for annual renewal. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
