Position description

A postdoctoral scholar is needed in the Digital Learning Lab at the University of California, Irvine, to support research on the use of conversational agents for learning. Research will support federally funded projects that are designing, implementing, and evaluating interactive videos and e-books incorporating conversational agents to help children ages 4 to 6 develop their language ability, literacy, and scientific knowledge.

Research will involve writing and revising conversational scripts; programming those scripts into interactive videos; managing relations and communications with grant partners, research sites, advisory board members, and participating faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students, designing experiments; developing and refining measures and instruments; training and leading teams in data collection and analysis; submitting and updating human subjects protocols; and writing reports, articles, presentations, and grant proposals.

Pending funding, position will begin between October 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022 (negotiable) and continue for one year, with the possibility of renewal, also pending funding.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Education or a related field prior to the start date and prior experience in research and development of interactive media for children’s learning. Desirable qualifications include knowledge and experience in programming conversational agents, prior research on the use of conversational agents in young children’s learning, knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods and research design, oruir publications or presentations on children’s learning from media, strong written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated ability to help lead teams or mentor undergraduate students.
