Position description

Susan and Henry Samueli Endowed Chairs in the UCI Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and School of Medicine

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites applications for the recruitment of two Endowed Chairs in the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and School of Medicine.

The Institute and School are recruiting for two endowed chair positions at the rank of associate or full professor, in the Ladder Rank Professor, Professor-in-Residence, or Professor of Clinical X series in the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and School of Medicine. The Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute in the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences at UCI offers integrative healthcare that incorporates research, teaching, and education into patient care, in the classroom and local community. The mission of the UCI School of Medicine is to promote biomedical sciences and medicine in Orange County, California, and beyond, through excellence in patient care, research, education and community service.

Criteria for the Ladder Rank and In-Residence Professor Series:
The incumbent will serve as Research Scholars and educators. They are expected to design and lead significant, thematic research with extramural support when that is needed. Teaching is required and may include clinical, classroom or lab teaching. The incumbent will have a major focus on innovative research of high significance as reflected in sustained, high quality publications and peer-reviewed national funding as a principal investigator.

Criteria for the Professor of Clinical "X" Series:
The incumbent will be expected to conduct substantial and meaningful research; teach residents and medical students; and perform public and University service. Excellent teaching is an essential criterion for appointment in this series. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven track record of academic productivity, as demonstrated through high-impact publications, thematic-based research, and/or grant funding.

Applicants should have an exemplary track record of investigation focused on improving health and wellness through understanding biological effects of, and/or have experience in clinical translational studies of complementary health interventions, particularly in managing chronic disease.

Physician-scientists who have interest and experience in the field of chronic disease (heart disease, cancer, neurological disease, gastrointestinal disorders, renal disease, immune disorders, etc.) are especially encouraged to apply.

Examples of relevant research areas include:
• Biological effects and mechanisms of action underlying complementary health approaches in chronic disease management
• Studies intended to identify and validate objective endpoints or biomarkers, assess and measure adherence or treatment fidelity, and otherwise strengthen the design of subsequent clinical trials of complementary health approaches
• Studies of the contribution to improved health and wellness made by complementary health interventions. These would include, but not be limited to, investigations of the impact of complementary health modalities including diet and exercise, nutritional supplements, acupuncture, mind-body and interventions in alleviating chronic disease.
• Research studies and clinical trials to examine the efficacy and effectiveness of integrative health therapies
• Medical research demonstrating the health- and cost- effectiveness of integrative primary care and integrative sub-specialty care

As an academic institute our mission also includes healthcare education, and therefore engagement of faculty in the area of integrative medicine in medical school education and Residency programs is also encouraged.

The Samueli Institute also promotes broad partnerships and collaborative research with other University departments as well as national and corporate research programs.

Applicants should be qualified for appointment as associate or full professor. The department will put forth a nomination and review for an endowed chair distinction. Successful candidates will receive Endowed Chair Funds, and those who also qualify for a ladder-rank faculty appointment will have a University FTE. The Endowed Chair will be reviewed after 5 years for renewal.

Applicants for each recruitment must have an MD, MD/PhD, PhD, DO or equivalent. Application materials should include a curriculum vitae, a one-page letter of interest, and a separate statement that addresses past and potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion. Applicants may complete an online application profile and upload their CV and application materials electronically.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidates/finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.

Application review for each recruitment will begin immediately and continue until the individual position is filled.
