COSTUME CONSTRUCTION LECTURER SEARCH

The Department of Drama is establishing a search of qualified applicants for a position as part-time lecturer for Fall Quarter 2021 in the curriculum area of Costume Construction.
The specific course to be taught is Drama 101A: Theatre Production: Costume. In general, the production courses are offered to give students the opportunity to participate in departmental productions. Students engage in the production and construction of designed work as well as its applied execution during performance.
A BA or BFA in Drama/Theater Arts is required. An MA or MFA is preferred; one to two years of prior teaching experience is also preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in a professional costume shop, ability to oversee and teach theatrical costume stitching, alterations and crafts, familiarity with generally accepted professional methods and standards is required. Compensation per quarter will be approximately $6,200.00 total and is non-negotiable.
Candidates for this position must have a strong commitment to teaching, training, and working in a university environment. Candidates must demonstrate a pedagogical and professional profile that is compatible with distinguished undergraduate training at a major research university. Candidates should show a demonstrated ability and commitment to work effectively with a diverse student population.
The selected candidate will teach in-person on the UCI campus three days/eight hours total per week in both a classroom and costume studio to supervise a laboratory class of undergraduate students learning skills in theatrical costume stitching and crafts while working on department productions. This position requires regular coordination with costume faculty and key costume shop staff to ensure that workflow aids the needs of the department productions. The selected candidate will:
• Teach introductory costume sewing techniques
• Teach introductory costume crafts techniques
• Understand and teach safety precautions
• Devise class materials such as samplers
• Demonstrate costume construction techniques
• Preview alterations or other shop projects to assign and supervise tasks for each lab section
• Liaison with costume faculty and costume shop staff
• Liaison with costume MFA students and designers
• Provide professional methods and resources to students
• Keep accurate records for grading
• Submit grades in the required manner and in a timely way
• Teach in accordance with the Drama Department Code of Conduct
