Position description

A postdoctoral position is available in the area of Nuclear Materials Chemistry in Prof. Finkeldei’s lab in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. The successful candidate will take a leading role in launching research in the newly established radiochemistry laboratories. The laboratories will host a sol-gel system for the internal gelation process to synthesize advanced nuclear fuels, SEM/EDS capabilities for chemical and microstructural analysis of nuclear fuels, and capabilities for nuclear waste form research, i.e. used nuclear fuel and ceramic waste forms. The successful applicant will be actively involved in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, support grant writing activities within the group, as well as research proposals for user facilities. There will also be opportunities to participate in the experimental design of irradiation experiments at UCI’s TRIGA research reactor located next to the new radiochemistry laboratories:

At a minimum, the applicant should hold a Ph.D. in nuclear materials chemistry, or a closely related field, and should have completed at least one year of postdoctoral research prior to starting. The successful applicant will also be well-versed in working safely in radiochemistry laboratories. Initial funding will be available for one year, but an extension of the position based on performance may be discussed at a later date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
