Position description

The UCI Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar to join Professor Kyriacos Athanasiou’s lab ( The main research objectives of this laboratory are to engineer device- and biologically-based solutions to medical problems. Work will begin in the facet joint tissue engineering but may broaden into other medical specialties as well.

The individual is expected to conduct research in the area of articular cartilage tissue engineering with applications in the musculoskeletal systems and a particular emphasis on the facet joint. Expertise in tissue engineering and histological, biochemical, and mechanical techniques is desirable. Particular skills are needed in cell culture and biofabrication. Additional work may include conducting in vivo studies and participating in the translation of cartilage tissue-engineered products. Duties will include designing experiments and conducting independent research, preparing study results for publication, and supervising/training graduate and undergraduate students in proper laboratory research techniques and record-keeping.

Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Background with hands-on experience in computer-aided manufacturing is preferred but not required. Prior work with animal studies is desirable. It is expected that the candidate will be comfortable initiating projects independently. Excellent verbal and communications skills in the English language are required.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and years of experience.
