The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, seeks a Junior Specialist for research in adolescent psychiatry at the Biobehavioral Research on Adolescent Development (BRoAD) Lab. The BRoAD Lab is a NIH-funded multi-project laboratory which aims to: 1) elucidate the influential biological, behavioral, psychological and social factors related to child and adolescent behavioral and mental health conditions; and 2) identify the underlying mechanisms of interventions/treatments for such behavioral/mental health conditions.
The Junior Specialist will work with the Principal Investigator, Lab Manager, and other lab members to conduct several research protocols with the general aims described above. These research protocols include; 1) a study focusing on social, biological, and racial/ethnic stress associated with obesity in adolescents, 2) a study examining neurocircuitry differences in adolescents suffering from depression with and without a history of abuse or maltreatment, and 3) a study evaluating changes in neurocircuitry in response to an intervention which aims to reduce risky behaviors, facilitate family communication, and promote a positive future for Black/ African-American youth.
This position is offered at a 100%-time appointment for one year with the potential to renew annually.
Required: 1) Bachelor’s degree in psychology, public health, or related field, 2) Excellent oral and written communication skills, 3) Fluency in English for reading research protocols, documenting data into charts, and communicating with research participants, 4) Exceptional record-keeping, organizational, and time-management skills and ability to multi-task, 5) Ability to build and maintain rapport with adolescent and adult research participants, colleagues, and community recruitment partners
Desired: 1) Human subjects research experience including knowledge of IRB, NIH, HIPAA and other regulatory rules and requirements, 2) Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, 3) Fluency in Spanish is highly desired, 4) Wet laboratory experience is highly desired
Special Considerations: 1) Must be able/willing to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends) as needed, 2) Must be able/willing to travel between study sites including UCI campus, UCI Medical Center, CHOC Children’s Hospital, and other sites in Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
Salaries are based on University of California salary scales, which are dependent on academic rank and step, and commensurate with experience.
Appointees to the Junior rank should possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or equivalent research experience, e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, software programs, social science research methods, humanities scholarship, or creative activities.
