Position description

The Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy, in the School of Social Ecology seeks applications to fill a full-time Postdoctoral Employee position in housing, land-use, and transportation policy. Candidates are required to have a PhD in such fields as urban planning, geography, economics, or other fields related to urban planning.
We seek a self-driven, creative thinker with strong quantitative and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of students and faculty members to research issues related to housing development in healthy, high-opportunity, and transportation-efficient areas. Relevant topics include: assessing different metrics for identifying healthy, high-opportunity (HHO), and transportation-efficient (TE) areas; analyzing laws and regulations related to developing housing in such areas; developing metrics to categorize HHO and TE areas; empirically assessing the potential for housing development in HHO and TE areas; and analyzing additional outcomes, which may include displacement risk associated with new development, potential impacts on ethno-racial equity and desegregation, housing affordability, and reductions in vehicle miles travelled.
Excellent statistical analysis skills are required. Candidates should have significant experience with at least one of the following statistical software packages: Stata or R. Candidates need not have expertise with both packages, but – if a candidate is familiar with only one – then the candidate must be willing to learn the other. In addition, the candidate should be familiar with (or willing to learn) the Git version control system. A working knowledge of the literatures related to housing, land use, and transportation policy (regardless of the specific discipline) is not required but desired; an intellectual interest in interdisciplinary study is essential.

The successful candidate will be mentored by Dr. Nicholas Marantz and will work closely with faculty collaborators and doctoral students. Overall, it is expected that the postdoctoral fellow will engage in high-level research and be involved in analysis and publication on projects currently underway at the University of California, Irvine.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and is benefits-eligible. The initial appointment will be for one year with extensions for further years dependent on the availability of extramural funding. Expected start date is May 1, 2022; if necessary, modifications are possible. Applicants will need to submit a dossier including: (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a cover letter, (3) sample publication, and (4) provide contact information for three references (please do not solicit letters).
