Position description

The University of California, Irvine Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a dynamic educator to join our residency team as the University of California, Irvine – Children’s Hospital of Orange County (UCI-CHOC) Pediatric Residency Program Director.

The UCI-CHOC program is the second largest residency sponsored by the UCI School of Medicine. The residency spans two children’s hospitals and a University medical center, offering residents tremendous access to educational resources and learning opportunities. Residents rotate through the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, and UCI Medical Center.

Required qualifications:
• History of leadership experience in graduate medical education.
• Proven scholarship in education.
• Intimate knowledge of the ACGME requirements for pediatric residency programs.
• Strong communication skills and diplomacy.
• Ability to work with faculty and trainees across all levels of medical education.
• Meets the requirements for faculty appointment at the University of California, Irvine.
• MD or equivalent degree; and American Board of Pediatrics board certification.

General Job Description:
• Reports to the Chair of Pediatric/CHOC Physician-in-Chief.
• Work in collaboration with the Associate Program Directors, Chief Residents, and staff in the oversight of all residency program activities.

Administrative duties:
• Oversees the residency program leadership team and office staff
• Coordinates residency activities between Miller’s, CHOC and UCIMC
• Acts as liaison between residency and various internal and external departments
• Oversees all rotation, call, and elective schedules

• Attends meetings and conferences as needed for the management of the residency program
• Completes verification of training for residents
• Manages due process and grievance procedures.

Curriculum Review and Development:
• Ensures residency core curriculum complies with Residency Review Committee (RRC) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements
• Designs and implements innovative curricular content and instructional strategies.
• Oversees annual review and revision of curriculum goals, objectives, and educational materials.
• Selects and evaluates core faculty as required by the ACGME.
• Engages in and encourages resident participation in research, quality improvement, and/or education scholarship.

Program Accreditation:
• Responsible for all accreditation activities, including ensuring ongoing compliance with ACGME requirements.
• Prepares annual updates and other ACGME required reports and notifications.
• Maintains and monitors compliance and assessment data, including work hour reports and program evaluations.

Recruitment and Retention:
• Oversees the recruitment and selection of residents.
• Actively engages in program outreach, including attendance at informational workshops for medical students.
• Work with the program coordinator in keeping online information updated, including the residency program website and FREIDA.
• Supervises wellness programming, career counseling, and other resident support services.
• Meets regularly with residents for feedback and programmatic evaluation.

Finance and Fundraising:
• Maintains resident assignments within resident FTE allocations at participating sites.

• Responds to program audits.
• Reviews residency budget for fiscally sound allocation of resources.
• Establishes strong relationships with alumni and community supporters.
• Active engagement in advancement activities.
