The UCI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in integrated urban design engineering. We are particularly interested in a civil and environmental systems engineer who connects multiple domains including water, energy, materials and structures, transportation, and the environment for smart and sustainable solutions to emerging urban challenges. The ideal candidate will have expertise in systems analysis and data science and apply this training to urban contexts subject to scarcity, inequity, pollution, population growth, extreme events, and climate change, addressing topics such as long-term sustainability and resilience. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) life cycle analysis, large-scale quantitative modeling of city design, energy systems, urban mobility, and sustainability. The candidate is expected to use computational, theoretical, and/or experimental approaches and develop a leading interdisciplinary program on integrated urban design and management that proceeds from concept to implementation.
UCI offers an exceptional environment for a successful career in civil and environmental engineering. Outside of CEE, UCI is home to complementary faculty in fields of natural, social, and information sciences and the collaborative campus environment offers many opportunities for convergent research. The School of Engineering houses several interdisciplinary research centers, including the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CALIT2). UCI ranked 1st on the New York Times list of Top Colleges Doing the Most for Low-Income Students, 8th on Forbes’ list of Best Value Colleges, and consistently ranks among the top 15 public universities in the U.S.
Located in the heart of diverse Orange County with a population of over 3 million, UCI enjoys the best of what Southern California has to offer: beaches, mountains, deserts, nature preserves, and a broad variety of cultural, entertainment, and intellectual activities. UCI is located 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 45 miles south of Los Angeles, and 60 miles from various mountain ranges. Irvine is one of the safest communities in the U.S. and one of the highest-ranked K-12 public-school systems in the country. Irvine and Orange County also offer an extremely dynamic and diversified business community.
Applicants are expected to have a doctorate from an accredited university in a relevant science or engineering discipline. Successful candidates will be expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute their leadership and innovative thinking toward excellent programs and projects within the department and the university. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, descriptions of research and teaching interests, a statement describing commitment to diversity, and the names and contact information of at least four references.
Applications received by November 1, 2021 will be given full consideration but the search will remain open until the position is filled. Applications should be submitted electronically at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF07118.
The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidates finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.
Applicants are required to have a doctorate in relevant science or engineering discipline from an accredited university.
