Position description

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites nominations and applications for an assistant, associate , or professor in- residence in the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and Department of Medicine.

Candidates should have specialization / experience in the field of integrative medicine through translational research projects that investigate mechanisms of integrative therapies such as acupuncture and other integrative approaches with or without conventional medicine in modulation of autonomic regulation of cardiovascular and endocrine system as well as neuroinflammation. Candidates should have an exemplary record of scholarly activities and a profound understanding of human diseases and the associated animal models and the underlying mechanisms as demonstrated via pre-clinical studies including central and peripheral autonomic regulation of circulatory system under pathologic condition.
Candidates with training in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, and integrative physiology are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have an exemplary record of scholarly activities and a profound understanding of human health and wellness as demonstrated through translational studies including the molecular and cellular mechanisms, in particular, electro-neurophysiological processes including intervention strategies that combine complementary practices such as neurostimulation through acupuncture with conventional medicine.
Examples of relevant research areas include:
• Neural electrophysiological recordings of somatic and autonomic sensory nerve fiber activity using in vivo single-unit or multiple units recording approaches to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying acupuncture in modulation of cardiovascular function and neuroinflammation in animal models.
• Analytic approaches include micro-dialysis, HPLC, Mass Spectrometry, and ELISA to examine the changes of neurotransmitters, biomarkers and hormones in the blood, microdialysate, local tissue including brain tissue related to integrative therapies in patients or animal models.
• Molecular approaches such as siRNA knockdown of specific molecular target such as receptor, enzyme and among other in animal models.
• Fluorescence and confocal imaging approaches to examine central neuronal activation and inhibition involved in acupuncture in modulation of brain function in animals
• Examine the basic central and peripheral mechanisms (extracellular recordings, pharmacological approach, neuronal pathway activity) involved in the complementary practices such as acupuncture and other adjunctive modalities.
• Determine the mechanisms of the dynamics of the actions of neurostimulation practices leading to optimal stimulation parameters.
• Demonstrate relationship of the autonomic nervous system with cardiovascular, endocrine and immune responses to lay the foundation for the complementary practices addressing metabolic syndromes such as hypertension, diabetes relating to gender disparities.
• Molecular neurophysiological approaches (neurostimulation, exercise) that couple translational research to clinical trials.

Preference will be given to Candidates who have ability to direct and train junior researcher to use the abovementioned approaches for conducting pre-clinical studies of mechanisms underlying the integrative medicine such as acupuncture in treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Fluency in Chinese to evaluate academic publication (to review and evaluate quality of literature related to traditional acupuncture therapy)

Applicants must have an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD degree.
