Postdoctoral Scholar: Mountains and Precipitation Patterns in Climate Models.

Professor Jane Baldwin in the Department of Earth System Science is seeking a postdoctoral research associate for a project examining the role of mountains in global climate model (GCM) biases and projected climate changes. The goal of the project is to reduce pervasive rainfall biases in GCM simulations. The project involves running and analyzing fully atmosphere-ocean coupled simulations of the NASA GISS GCM with various topographic boundary conditions, and using innovative machine learning-based methods for GCM tuning. The project benefits from collaboration between Professor Baldwin’s group and Dr. Gregory Elsaesser at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City. Qualifications and Responsibilities:

A recent or expected Ph.D. in atmospheric science, climate science, or other related fields is required (at the time of application) and a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, climate science, or other related fields is required (at the time of hire). A strong background in climate simulation is recommended. Well-qualified candidates will be knowledgeable about, or equipped to rapidly learn, large-scale atmospheric and atmosphere-ocean coupled dynamics, some machine learning, and Python and Fortran programming. Computational fluency is a plus, as well as skill dealing with large datasets. Responsibilities will include running simulations on high performance supercomputers, process-driven analysis of simulations and observations, leading hypothesis-driven publications, and presentation at major international conferences (e.g., AGU, AMS).

The Department of Earth System Science at UC Irvine is a highly interdisciplinary environment comprising ~25 faculty with expertise across many components of the Earth System, including atmospheric and climate dynamics, land surface processes, terrestrial and marine biogeochemical cycles, ice sheets, and human systems. UC Irvine is located about halfway between1 hour away from both Los Angeles and San Diego in coastal Southern California. It’s a beautiful place to live, close to nice beaches, and in a Mediterranean climate.
