Position description

We are seeking a qualified, highly motivated person to work on a 25-50% position in the Science of Learning Lab, in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine. The SoL Lab carries out research on a number of projects related to understanding students’ relational reasoning, higher-order thinking, and mathematical learning. The specialist will contribute to two projects. One project focuses on the relations between higher-order thinking interventions and students’ relational thinking. The other project examines the role of pressure and anxiety on the quality of student learning. This is a 1-year position (with possibility of renewal) with a proposed start date of December 1, 2021 (negotiable).

The specialist will consult on the relational reasoning measures included in our HOT intervention study and assist with the implementation of the data cleaning, data coding, and data analysis plans for each of the projects. In addition, he or she will join a project team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates conducting a range of studies that examine the roles of pressure, visual support, and linguistic inputs on students’ learning. Activities will include assisting with designing research projects, collaborating and communicating with the project team on implementing plans, data management, coding, and analysis, writing up results for publications and presentations, and documenting information on the project(s).

Minimum Qualifications
• PhD in Education or related field
• 5 years of direct experience working with statistical analyses and relational reasoning.
Preferred Qualifications
• Expertise in research and evaluation of educational interventions
• Broad knowledge of quantitative research design, including experiments and power analysis
• Advanced expertise in academic writing and editing for peer-reviewed scholarly articles
