Junior Specialist or Assistant Specialist position, Jusiak Laboratory in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of California Irvine

Description
The University of California Irvine offers an invigorating working and training environment in the Synthetic Biology and Anti-Cancer Laboratory of Dr. Barbara Jusiak. We’re looking for an enthusiastic new team member to join us in using use the emerging field of Synthetic Biology to engineer macrophages to target cancer for destruction by the immune system. We use a combination of model systems in parallel: 1) cultured mammalian cells, 2) in vivo mouse experiments, and 3) fruit flies (Drosophila), which can be genetically manipulated to develop cancer, and which have a simple immune system with macrophage-like cells. This position is ideal for a self-motivated, organized individual interested in working in a highly collaborative, dynamic research environment. You will work under the mentorship of a PhD Synthetic Biologist. Overall, we seek a self-motivated, conscientious, well-organized candidate with good written and verbal communication skills and a willingness to learn new techniques.

Principal Responsibilities:
• Cell culture
• Molecular Biology
• Mouse Experiments
• Drosophila husbandry
• Immunohistochemistry and fluorescent microscopy
• Lab Maintenance tasks (running autoclave, preparing solutions, restocking supplies)
• Maintaining detailed records of all experiments in lab notebook

Required Qualifications:
• Experience with mammalian tissue culture
• Proficiency with MS Office
• Willingness to work with both mice (including sacrificing them for as part of the experiment) and fruit flies (Drosophila)
• Ability to learn new techniques, protocols, and complex tasks with general instruction
• Ability to work independently and efficiently in an organized and detail-oriented manner
• Ability to do some work in the evening and on weekends
• Commitment to stay for two years

Preferred/a plus but not required – experience with:
• Working with mice
• Fluorescent microscopy
• Flow cytometry
• Molecular biology (PCR, Gibson assembly, plasmid preps, etc.).
• An intrinsic scientific curiosity and enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise
