UC Irvine, School of Medicine, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is an essential component of the comprehensive cardiovascular program at UC Irvine's School of Medicine. The goal of the program is to provide the highest level of care with the use of the most modern and cutting-edge surgical techniques and technologies. We also work closely in collaboration with cardiology and vascular surgery to partner in this endeavor.

The program currently performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary, valvular, aortic, and arrhythmia, both open and via minimally invasive approaches. We have a growing advanced heart failure and MCS program. There are active structural heart (TAVR, Mitraclip, Watchman) as well as a TEVAR programs with procedures performed using our two hybrid operating rooms. There are currently four APPs supporting the division of cardiothoracic surgery and a fully staffed, 24/7 in-house CVICU team. UCI is the only academic and tertiary care center in Orange County, and we manage complex cardiac patients from throughout the region.

The division was reorganized and refocused in 1995, and it has since been a leader in terms of outcomes research and quality improvement. For the past 10 years, division faculty members have consistently achieved superior clinical outcomes in a challenging environment with critically ill patients. The most recent Leapfrog Report listed UC Irvine as one of only 98 hospitals as a “Leapfrog Top Hospital,” noting that the program is “better than the national average for coronary bypass procedures,” despite having one of the highest-risk populations in California.

The general surgery residents who rotate through the cardiothoracic service receive intensive educational experience. The best and brightest remain challenged to master the complex hemodynamic and physiologic alterations found in the sickest patients. This is also a fertile educational environment for third- and fourth-year medical students who receive individual attention during their rotations, which include one-on-one discussions with attending physicians, and participation in the operating room team and on the clinical units.

The goal of UC Irvine, School of Medicine, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is to provide the highest quality cardiothoracic surgery services and outcomes, offer superb customer service, emphasize continuous quality improvement, encourage growth and diversity of services, provide responsible, cost-effective care, and prepare for the changing healthcare environment.

UC Irvine, School of Medicine, Department of Surgery
UC Irvine’s Department of Surgery faculty members have expertise in multiple complex diseases and are integrated to subspecialties including cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, vascular diseases, cardiovascular diseases, hepatobiliary diseases, trauma and surgical critical care.

The department has become one of the region’s most prestigious clinical, research and academic surgical programs for several key reasons, including:

• UC Irvine is one of only several institutions nationwide to be named a Level I Accredited Educational Institute by the American College of Surgeons. Fellowships and residencies are offered in nearly every specialty, and the general surgery residency is one of the most competitive in the country.
• UC Irvine surgeons have pioneered several minimally invasive surgical approaches, including laparoscopic nephrectomy for kidney removal and endoscopic ultrasound — guided fine needle aspirations for gastrointestinal conditions. In addition, UC Irvine is renowned for delivering leading-edge training and education to surgeons throughout the nation.
• UC Irvine was the first in Orange County to install the da Vinci robotic system, the gold standard of minimally invasive surgical procedures, which is regularly used to treat patients with urological, gastroenterological, cardiothoracic, vascular and gynecological problems, among others.
• UC Irvine surgeons pioneered laparoscopic pancreatic surgeries and perform more of these surgeries than any institution on the West Coast. In terms of patient outcomes, UC Irvine is in the top 5 percent for Whipple procedures and No. 2 in the country for laparoscopic distal pancreas resections. Similar outcomes exist for esophageal resection.
• UC Irvine has Orange County’s only Level I Trauma Center, treats more trauma cases than any other hospital in the county. The Level I designation — the highest distinction awarded by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma — means that UC Irvine Medical Center fulfills the nation’s highest standards in trauma care for treating both adults and children.
• Surgeons at UC Irvine have been responsible for many technologies and therapies to improve healthcare. In fact, UC Irvine is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s top 50 medical schools for research.

For more than 40 years, the Department of Surgery has been dedicated to helping patients live well and stay well. The department’s principle — “When You See One of Us, You See All of Us” — underscores the department’s commitment to ensure patients the broadest expertise and most comprehensive care possible.
