Position description

A project scientist is needed in the Digital Learning Lab at the University of California, Irvine, to support research on the use of conversational agents for learning. Research will support federally funded projects that are designing, implementing, and evaluating interactive videos incorporating conversational science to help children ages 4 to 6 develop their language ability and scientific knowledge.

Research will involve writing and revising conversational scripts; programming those scripts into interactive videos; managing relations and communications with grant partners, research sites, advisory board members, and participating faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students, designing experiments; developing and refining measures and instruments; training and leading teams in data collection and analysis; submitting and updating human subjects protocols; and writing reports, articles, presentations, and grant proposals.

Position will begin in January 2022 and continue for one year, with possibility of renewal pending funding. Rank within the project scientist series and salary will be determined based on background and qualifications.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in Education or a related field prior to the start date; knowledge and experience in programming conversational agents using Dialogflow; knowledge and experience in editing videos for incorporation of conversational agents; prior research and publication related to language learning and science development for young children; prior research on the use of conversational agents in young children’s learning; expertise and experience in both qualitative and quantitative educational research; and prior experiences in leading research teams in the collection of field data.
