Position description

The Ocular Surface Laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology, University of California Irvine, School of Medicine has an opening for a Junior Specialist. The OS Lab focuses on regenerative and stem cell research into the lipid synthesizing, meibomian gland of the eyelid that secretes the lipid layer of the tear film and undergoes an age-related atrophy leading to loss of tear film lipid and dry eye disease.

Job responsibilities include:

1) Establishing primary cell cultures from mouse, rabbit and human eyelid tissue and maintenance of immortalized human cell lines.

2) Cell culture experiments involving treating cells with differentiation factors, collection of protein and RNA for western blotting and qPCR.

3) Maintaining mouse colony and collection of tissue for stem cell analysis by Immune Tomography and 3D-Imaging Mass Spectroscopy.

4) Performance of digital imaging microscopy and image analysis.

A Bachelors or equivalent training in Biology or Cell Biology preferred and willingness to be trained in cell and molecular biology and microscopy. Also, a willingness to work with animals, mice and rabbits.

Minimum Qualifications:

Junior Specialist, Step I-II – Appointees to the Junior rank
should possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent
degree) or equivalent research experience.
