Position description

SCHOLARLY SERVICES LIBRARIAN

DESCRIPTION

The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking, and self-motivated individual to serve as Scholarly Services Librarian in its Law Library. Under the general supervision of the Head of Public Services, the Scholarly Services Librarian supports and promotes access, impact, and visibility to the scholarly output of the UC Irvine School of Law. The Scholarly Services Librarian plans and manages various initiatives and programs related to promoting faculty scholarship, including the Faculty Publications bibliography/database and the Faculty Scholarship repository.

In addition, the Scholarly Services Librarian will support interlibrary loan/document delivery, Law School journals, Law School archival collections, and provide effective Front Desk and Reference Desk service to the Law School and University community.

Responsibilities include:

Scholarly Communications Duties
• Develop, manage, and promote a formalized scholarly communications program, including developing new and expanding existing library services for faculty publication and scholarship support.

• Manage the Law School’s digital scholarship and open access platforms, including Digital Commons, faculty working papers in SSRN, and University of California’s eScholarship.

• Maintain a bibliography of the Law School faculty’s scholarly publications.

• Assist Law School faculty in creating and maintaining scholarly profiles (e.g., ORCID, HeinOnline, SSRN, Google Scholar).

• Serve as the point of contact for faculty regarding publishing, open access, digital scholarship, and maximizing impact and reach of scholarship.

• Serve as the point of contact for faculty and students for article submissions on Scholastica or other journal submission platforms.

• Provide guidance and training on scholarly communications and digital scholarship for the Law Library, Law School, and law students.

• Coordinate with the Law School Communications department to ensure cohesive promotion of faculty scholarship and scholarly activities.

• Build and maintain collaborative partnerships related to digital initiatives with faculty, researchers, and other campus units

• Monitor advances in scholarly communication strategies, open access, institutional repositories, and related areas and communicate implications to Law School and campus stakeholders.

• Serve as the Law School’s archival liaison to facilitate record keeping of Law School documentation and transfer to University Archives.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Journal Duties
• Coordinate interlibrary loan and document delivery services for faculty, including researching publishers, vendors, and lending libraries.

• Provide significant support to the Law School’s student-run journals, including coordinating interlibrary loan requests, assisting with source collection, Perma.cc, and training journal staff.

Public Services Duties
• Provide general information, customer service, and circulation assistance through regular shifts at the Front Desk, including evenings and weekends as needed.

• Provide in-depth research assistance to Law Library patrons through regular shifts at the Reference Desk, including evenings and weekends as needed.

• Collaborate with all librarians to design, develop, and maintain the research webpages on the Law Library website, including LibGuides.

• Participate in Law Library collection development efforts, including selecting and assessing resources.

• Lead tours, orientations, and workshops, such as for the Saturday Academy of Law or Pre-Law Outreach Program, as appropriate.

• Provide comprehensive research on projects to support Law School faculty and administrators.

• Under the direction of or in consultation with Department Heads, develop and establish policies and procedures for Library services.

• Develop and maintain documentation for primary job functions and participate in the maintenance of department-wide and Library-wide documentation.

Other Duties
• Actively participate on Law Library committees, task forces, and project teams.
• Represent the Law Library on various Law School, campus-wide, and UC-wide Library System committees, and at various meetings and other functions.
• Participate in and contribute to the profession through professional activities outside the Law Library, including university and public service, and/or research and other creative activity. These activities normally relate to and enhance performance of the primary position responsibilities.
• Develop and maintain awareness of developments in the fields of library science and legal research to enhance performance of primary position responsibilities.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement processes and programs both independently and in a team, in a dynamically changing environment.
• Extensive knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats; fluency with new and emerging digital data and scholarly communications technology as they relate to information literacy, legal practice, and library services, or a strong demonstrated interest in developing fluency.
• Up to two years of successful experience in academic law libraries, including demonstrated background in providing effective and successful services to law faculty and law students.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• A professional degree from a library school with a program accredited by the American Library Association, or other appropriate degree(s) or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.
• Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience shepherding ideas and projects through an organization without a formal leadership role.
• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.
