Position description

Job Opening: Postdoctoral Fellow

Job Location: Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of California Irvine (UCI), Laboratory (PI Sergio Armando Villalta).

Job description: The candidate will investigate the interplay between regulatory T cells and skeletal muscle macrophage during muscular dystrophy, and define how this interaction influences fibrosis and regeneration.

Research Environment: UCI is consistently recognized as a trailblazer in a broad range of fields. According to the U.S. News & World Report, UCI ranks in the top 10 public schools in the United States, garnering national and international honors in every school. The campus’s multifaceted research programs paired with world-class leadership create an environment worthy of any passionate postdoctoral scholar. UCI sits in the heart of Orange County, a culturally diverse community renowned for its sandy beaches, year-round outdoor activities, delectable eateries and vibrant lifestyle.

Villalta Laboratory: The Villalta Lab is a multidisciplinary team consisting of postdocs, students and staff from diverse backgrounds. The team includes muscle physiologist and immunologist that collaboratively work on defining how the immune system contributes to muscle disorders in human and mouse models of disease. Our investigations aim to define how innate and adaptative immunity promote muscle injury and fibrosis. Additionally, we are examining how specialized immune cell populations regulate muscle regeneration through interactions with muscle-resident progenitors. When not in the lab, we enjoy visiting one of many local microbreweries, grilling food, game nights and beach days.

Qualifications and Application Material: We are seeking a passionate individual who is a self-starter, works well in teams, and has an exemplary track record of academic performance. Competitive candidates should have experience in immunology or muscle biology and a strong computational background with experience in the analysis of scRNAseq data. We will consider candidates experienced in scRNAseq platforms or with technical mastery in the preparation of single-cell suspension from tissues, preparing sequencing libraries, immunological assays and muscle histopathology. Candidates interested in implementing high-throughput genomics in their immunology and muscle training, and enjoy working in a fast-paced, exciting environment are encouraged to send their CV to villalts@uci.edu. Interested candidates should complete the application profile and provide 1) A motivational letter on why you are interested in joining the lab; 2) A CV; 3) Names and contact information for three references. Please send inquiries about the position to Sergio Armando Villalta, Ph.D. at villalts@uci.edu 4) An inclusive excellence activities statement is required (as noted in the requirements tab).
