Position description

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine invites applications (PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree required) for a full-time faculty position. The academic appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank in the Line (tenure track) series, which confers membership in the UCI Academic Senate. The School and Department seek a computational pathologist with a strong academic background, exciting research program, and leadership skills in computational pathology broadly conceived. Expertise with big data and machine learning including deep learning leveraging anatomic or clinical pathology subject matter is highly desirable. Interest and experience may include artificial intelligence based analyses of whole slide digital images or of large datasets including but not limited to clinical, molecular/genetic, chemical, or microbiological data elements. We are not seeking researchers with a predominantly or purely natural language orientation. Use of clinical data, in addition to pathology data, is desirable, but the candidate should have a track record and/or primary interest in conducting pathology-based research. Candidates are expected to have a leadership role in training the next generation of computational pathologists, in developing the program for computational pathology, and in leading their own research program.

The successful recruit will have the opportunity to collaborate with other UCI faculty to build multidisciplinary research programs that synergize computational approaches with those of other biomedical and pathology branches. To achieve this goal, the candidate may choose to leverage existing resources and strengths of UCI Health and its UCI campus partners, including the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine, Center for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems (CML), Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurologic Disorders (iMIND), Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), Center for Autism Research and Translation (CART), Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC), Center for Complex Biological Systems (CCBS), and graduate and resident training programs in informatics, computer sciences, statistics, pathology, neurosciences, biomedical sciences, and systems biology. There are opportunities to collaborate with other campuses of the University of California system.

The candidate must have a PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent. Board certification in pathology, its subspecialties, and informatics will be considered but are not required. The successful recruit will also participate in teaching and mentoring activities of the Department, which may involve graduate students, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. To apply for this position, candidates should upload their curriculum vitae, statements (research, teaching, diversity), reference information, and Authorization to Release Information form to UCI Recruit: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/07328.
