Position description

The UCI Department of Material Science and Engineering in the Samueli School of Engineering has an opening for an Assistant Researcher in the Advanced Casting Research Center (ACRC).

High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) is a cost-effective manufacturing technology that forces liquid metal, such as zinc, aluminum, and copper alloys, into a cavity at high velocity and high pressure.

The objective of the project is to develop guidelines for the design of the conformal cooling lines within the tools. These guidelines need to address factors such as shape, size, and length of the cooling and matching this with appropriate fluid flow conditions. This will be accomplished by extensive modeling and simulation efforts in commercially available software’s such as Magmasoft and COMSOL Multiphysics in combination with extensive experimental validation through in-plant trials. Analysis is a combination between traditional metallurgical means as well as x-ray computed tomography.

This position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or related fields, and experience developing an innovative metal 3d printing technique using semi-solid metal, developing alternative molten metal cleaning procedures for Al-Cu alloys, and developing design guidelines for conformal cooling of high pressure die cast components. This position is open for Professional Researchers at the Assistant rank.

This is an ongoing recruitment and this position is dependent upon availability of extramural funding. Initial appointments are short-term and renewal is based on job performance and availability of support. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and years of experience.

Application Procedure: Applicants will need to upload curriculum vitae, name/addresses of at least three references, cover letter expressing area(s) of interest, statement of research, and inclusive statement to our online RECRUIT system at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF07337.
