Position description

The UCI Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar in Prof. Kyriacos Athanasiou’s lab (http://engineering.uci.edu/users/kyriacos-athanasiou). The main research objectives of this laboratory are to engineer device- and biologically-based solutions to medical problems. Work will concentrate on interrogating the biomechanical properties of a novel cell type, the lipochondrocyte, as funded by a grant from the Keck Foundation.

The individual is expected to conduct research in the area of auricular cartilage tissue engineering with applications in the musculoskeletal systems and a particular emphasis on understanding the unique biomechanical properties of the novel lipochondrocyte and the matrices within which these cells reside. Expertise in biomechanics, biomechanical modeling, and biomechanical assays are of critical importance, and additional expertise in tissue engineering, cell culture, histological, and biochemical techniques are highly desirable. Duties will include designing experiments and conducting independent research, preparing study results for publication, and supervising/training graduate and undergraduate students in proper laboratory research techniques and record-keeping.

Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Prior work with biomechanical modeling is highly desired. It is expected that the candidate will be comfortable initiating projects independently. Excellent verbal and communications skills in the English language are required.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and years of experience.

Application Procedure: Applicants will need to upload their curriculum vitae, cover letter with a brief description of relevant experience, and names of at least three references to our online RECRUIT system at http://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF07401
