Position description
The Hematology/Oncology Division in the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine, University of California, Irvine, is recruiting for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholars to support research projects in the laboratory of Dr. Kalpna Gupta. This Postdoctoral Scholar position is available immediately.
The Gupta lab focuses on inflammatory and nociceptive mechanisms underlying acute and chronic pain.
Primary Responsibilities:
The UCI Division of Hematology/Oncology has an opportunity for a postdoctoral position within the laboratory of Kalpna Gupta to work on projects related to the pathobiology of pain, neuroinflammation and vascular dysfunction. A major focus of this position will be to utilize various imaging modalities to identify and quantify variations in inflammatory, vascular and neuronal activation in vitro and an established mouse model of sickle cell disease and cancer. This will be accomplished using a variety of technologies including pain behaviors, confocal microscopy imaging, live calcium imaging, mast cell and neuronal cell culture, cell and molecular biology and analysis with ELISA. This position will involve method development, data analysis and preparing the data for presentation and publication.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will also be encouraged to attend and present the results of their research at scientific conferences, participate in study meetings and interact with collaborative research groups; mentor and work with graduate and undergraduate students; develop and pursue their own research ideas; as well as develop and polish any skills and experiences that they feel will best prepare them for their career goals.
Qualifications:
We are seeking motivated applicants who have an M.D., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree(s) in bioengineering or biological sciences. Candidates should have a record of completed graduate research that can be directly applied to the field of interest described above. Prior experience in imaging is highly desirable. The successful candidate must have a broad range of skills, including the ability to maintain effective interactions and collaborations with other members of the lab and scientific community. Ability to maintain the laboratory notebook and record of acquired data and to follow written and verbal directions is essential. Research independence and ability to write and fund independent research projects are highly desirable. Laboratory experience is required.
The position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate and is for a period of one year with the possibility of renewal.
Strong experience and interest in one or more of the following areas is preferred, but not required:
• Pain behaviors, electrophysiology and calcium signaling
• Cell signaling and molecular biology
• Inflammation and imaging
• A strong publication record
