Position description

The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine, University of California, Irvine, anticipates openings for physicians in its various divisions. These openings will be at the level of Assistant Clinical Professor or above (non-tenure), depending upon the candidate’s qualifications, and will be in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series.

Surgical Divisions include the following: Cardiothoracic Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Emergency General Surgery (EGS), Gastrointestinal Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplantation Surgery, Trauma Surgery, and Vascular Surgery

Requirements – An M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., board certification or board eligibility in specialty, and a California Medical License are required. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with training, qualifications, and experience.
Strong interest and demonstrated abilities in delivering patient care in an academic clinical setting, teaching residents and medical students, and providing service to the university are required.

Faculty in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series are expected to contribute with distinction in the areas of teaching, mentoring of trainees and junior faculty, University and public service, professional competence, and creative and/or scholarly activity.

The major criteria for appointment to the Associate Professor or Professor rank in this series is your record must demonstrate contributions to scholarly, creative, or administrative activities. Scholarly or creative activities are reviewed from the perspective that such activities are generally derived from clinical teaching and professional service activities. A demonstrated distinction in the special competencies appropriate to your field and its characteristic activities will be recognized as a criteria for appointment. Evidence of scholarly or creative activity will be evaluated in the context of your academic responsibilities, and the time available for creative activity.
