Clinical Epileptologist

The Department of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine is recruiting a BC/BE clinical epileptologist with expertise in surgical epilepsy treatments to take on a leadership role in an outstanding established epilepsy program. Fellowship training in epilepsy/neurophysiology, and experience in a level 4 epilepsy center is required. Primary responsibilities of the position include expanding and innovating in inpatient and outpatient clinical care; teaching medical students, residents, and fellows; developing research and creative work; and providing university/public service. Clinical duties encompass but are not limited to the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and seizures; clinical pre-surgical epilepsy evaluations; performing phase I and phase II epilepsy monitoring unit investigations; review and interpretation of adult routine and continuous EEG monitoring; and carrying out Wada test and cortical stimulation to map motor and language function.

The position is offered in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) or Clinical Neurology series at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank commensurate with experience. The UC Irvine Department of Neurology and UC Irvine Health teaching hospital is nationally ranked in US News & World Report. The incumbent will deliver care at our Neurology outpatient and neurophysiology clinic, and UC Medical Center Hospital. UC Irvine is an NAEC Level 4 Epilepsy Center and the only academic Epilepsy program serving the ~3 million people in the Orange County area. The department continues to expand with 50 clinical faculty across all neurological specialties with excellent nursing, staff, neuropsychology, social work, and pharmacological support, and benefits from the outstanding academic and research environment at UCI.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

  • M.D., DO or M.D./Ph.D.
  • California medical license or licensure eligibility.
  • Completion of an ACGME approved residency program in Neurology
  • Completion of fellowship training in epilepsy or clinical neurophysiology (epilepsy track)
  • Board certified or eligible in Neurology by the ABPN on or before start date
  • Board certified in Epilepsy and/or Clinical Neurophysiology by the ABPN on or before start date
  • Experience in a level 4 epilepsy center
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment; adhere to policies and procedures; and provide University/public service
  • For the Clinical Neurology series, the ability and experience to conduct scholarly/clinical/translational research and a record of publications in peer reviewed journals

Preferred qualifications:

  • Dedication to patients, their families, and providing excellent service.
  • Interest and experience in working in a collaborative comprehensive neurosciences center.
  • Active involvement with international, national, and/or regional professional societies preferred.
  • Interests in teaching and/or clinical research/clinical trials.
  • For the Clinical Neurology series, evidence of success in obtaining extramural funding and/or administering clinical trials
  • Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring training and experience
