Position description

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is a self-supporting unit within the University of California. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse, complex, and ever-changing student population. The Corporate Education Department is a leader in employee development and education, locally and across the globe. We deliver educational courses and programs on-site and online to our clients developed around the unique industry and needs of each organization. Our students are in full time working positions and are seeking additional education that will enable them to update their skills, support a new company initiative, or prepare for industry certifications or exams. We are seeking world-class instructors who are experts in their fields, with extensive hands-on experience as business professionals and community leaders.

Part-time instructor positions are on a course-by-course contracted basis. This is NOT a faculty position.

Online and in-person teaching positions are now available in the Corporate Project Management Certificate Program. We are seeking qualified applicants possessing current knowledge and/or teaching experience in the topic of Project Management.

Specific Instructor Duties
• Develop and/or update course syllabi in consultation with the UCI DCE Corporate Education & Global Partnerships Program Accounts Manager as assigned and using approved syllabus template.
• Prepare and deliver online course materials and learning assessments in the assigned format.
• Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform.
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies for the course.
• Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes and assign grades.
• Post final student grades to the transcript system by set deadlines.
• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
• Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with Program Accounts Manager as needed.
• Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice.
• Participate in required orientations and complete mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Irvine.
• Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including completing all hiring paperwork, submitting updated quarterly syllabi, posting bio and photo on the UCI DCE website, signing quarterly contract, ordering required texts, and communicating AV and classroom needs.
• Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies in the classroom inclusive of both domestic and international student populations.
• Allow students to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months following the last class session.
• Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (i.e.: make arrangements for guest speakers, etc.).
• Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning.
• Update materials periodically, and regularly monitor course evaluations in order to make adjustments and improvements to the curriculum.

Our curriculum is constantly updated and tailored to bring students the background, expertise, and business practices they need to remain competitive and advance their careers. Taught by qualified practitioners, our courses feature practical application, underlying rationale, and current issues, all of which can be immediately utilized in and applied to our students’ work environments.

Part-time, temporary assignments are on an as-needed basis. We are looking specifically for instructors who are qualified to teach the following course(s) as early as fall quarter 2022.

Course Description: Project Management Overview
This course is an introduction to project management, the roles and responsibilities of the project manager and project team, and the traditional/Waterfall methodology. Students will learn what happens at each stage of the project life cycle and will explore the importance of tailoring to fit their own project context.

Course Description: Project Initiation
This course explains the elements essential to starting a project, including eliciting requirements, developing a project charter, selecting and building the project team, and facilitating project kick off. Students will practice these skills and examine how the choice of project methodology impacts the work to be done.

Course Description: Project Planning and Risk
The key to a successful project is the ability to plan effectively, especially preparing for risk. This course gives students the opportunity to practice building elements important to project planning, including developing a work breakdown structure, developing a RAM or RACI, creating a project plan, and identifying, planning, and mitigating risk, regardless of the chosen methodology.

Course Description: Project Schedule and Cost
To meet stakeholder requirements and successfully complete a project, project managers need to be mindful of both schedule and cost. In this course, students will learn how to estimate a timeline and develop integrated schedules and milestones, calculate critical path, approximate cost and establish a project budget, and track project performance and value delivery for benefit realization.

Course Description: Project Stakeholders and Change Management
Projects involve multiple stakeholders and can require change management to see them through to successful completion. This course teaches participants how to identify and assess stakeholders, assess the impact of change, manage resistance and engage their organization in change, and communicate that change to others.

Course Description: Project Procurement
Projects can require procurement of goods or services from parties outside your organization. This course educates students about the various types of contracts and associated risks that exist, the lifecycle of a typical contract, how to select vendors, and how to perform and make changes to a contract to ensure project success.

Course Description: Agile Project Management
Agile project management is an iterative project methodology that works well for specific types of projects. This course teaches students what Agile methodology is and focuses on components of this methodology, including, developing and prioritizing the product backlog, prioritizing work through SCRUM and Kanban, and using range estimating and burn down charts.

Course Description: Project Leadership and Communication
The bulk of the work of a project manager is leading a project team and communicating with that team and project stakeholders. In this course, students will learn how to apply verbal and written communication, conflict management and problem solving, virtual team management, and team empowerment and motivation skills to serve as effective project leaders. Individuals hired to teach these courses must understand that all such agreements with the University are made on a course-by-course basis and that the instructor will be made no guarantee of continual involvement with the University in any capacity.


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Advanced degree from an accredited institution; PMP Certification required
• Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in project management
• College-level teaching experience for a corporate entity or organized equivalent
• Previous experience teaching remotely and/or online using synchronous instruction tools and a Learning Management System.
