Position description

The Department of Computer Science (CS) in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites applications for an Open Rank Professor of Teaching beginning July 1, 2023. The Department is looking for candidates with exceptional teaching in all systems areas of computer science, with particular interest in Data Management, Operating Systems, and Security & Privacy. Candidates should be able to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Professor of Teaching series requires, in addition to excellent teaching and service, that the candidate make outstanding and recognized contributions to the development of his or her specific discipline and/or of pedagogy. This position parallels the tenure-track faculty series. The search is inviting applicants at all levels: assistant (potential security of employment; analogous to pre-tenure), associate, and full rank. This is a full-time faculty position designed for individuals who wish to focus their careers on teaching, professional activities, and University and public service. Professors of Teaching are members of the University of California Academic Senate and have all the usual benefits of Senate membership.

At UCI, ICS brings together three unique departments (Computer Science, Informatics, and Statistics), thus strategically positioning itself to meet the technical and social challenges of computing and information systems in the coming decades. The U.S. News and World Report 2021 ranking identifies UCI as a top 10 public university and one of the top 30 universities for computer science in the United States. ICS is one of only five computing-focused schools among the Association of American Universities (AAU) members. Our 100+ faculty members include 2 NAE Members, 14 ACM Fellows, 11 IEEE Fellows, 10 AAAS Fellows, 2 IFIP Fellows, and many other international award winners.

UCI was ranked as the No. 1 college by Money Magazine, and identified by the New York Times as No. 1 among U.S. universities that do the most for low-income students. UCI is located in Orange County, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 45 miles south of Los Angeles. Irvine is one of the safest communities in the U.S. and offers a very pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public school systems in the nation.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science (or closely related field), plus a strong interest and proven record of excellence in teaching CS courses at the university level. Completed applications containing a cover letter, curriculum vita, all available teaching evaluations, statements on contributions to diversity and teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation should be uploaded electronically as PDF files.

Applications received by December 1, 2022, will receive the fullest consideration.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence; where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. In support of this commitment, and as a means to address all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine will conduct an institutional reference check on recruitment finalists of Senate Ladder-Rank Professor and Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e. assistant, associate, full), prior to extending a formal offer of appointment.
