Position description
The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is a self-supporting unit within the University of California. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse, complex, and ever-changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course by course contracted basis. This is NOT a faculty position.
English Language Programs, within UCI’s Division of Continuing Education, seeks applicants for part-time ESL teaching positions in our intensive-English and custom programs for international students in 2023. Teachers will join a collegial, professional teaching environment that prizes excellence and has welcomed and trained international students for more than 30 years. Our students hold full-time study visas and focus primarily on building academic skills.
Specific Instructor Duties
• Teach excellently and with enthusiasm
• Design interactive and motivational classroom activities with a communicative aim to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies for the course
• Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes, and assign grades
• Collaborate with and support ESL colleagues to ensure continuity within the program
• Complete mandatory training programs by UC Irvine-established deadlines
• Submit all required hiring and class paperwork by set deadlines
• Become familiar with and follow program’s Instructor Handbook and curricular guidelines
• Attend pre-program class-planning meeting and scheduled teacher meetings

We are looking specifically for instructors who are qualified to teach the following course(s) as early as Winter quarter (beginning January 11, 2023).
Courses Available:
Classes include grammar, writing, reading, speaking & listening, and a range of elective topics. Programs may also focus on test-prep, academic preparation, English for Specific Purposes (e.g. Business English, STEM), or American culture topics. Part-time teachers are offered classes on a by-quarterly basis and may teach up to an average of 10 hours a week and a maximum of 400 hours per year. Teaching assignments are made a few days before classes begin and are based on student enrollments. All ESL classes meet in-person at UCI DCE. Classes meet Monday–Friday and are scheduled at various times mostly between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Afternoon and evening classes may also be offered.
Individuals hired to teach these courses must understand that all such agreements with the University are made on a course-by-course basis and that the Instructor will be made no guarantee of continual involvement with the University in any capacity.
