Position description
The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Program in Public Health (PPH), in anticipation of becoming a School of Population and Public Health, would like to announce the search for an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Teaching in Epidemiology & Biostatistics. The Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics (DEB) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) is one of four departments that rests in the emerging School of Population and Public Health in the new College of Health Sciences.
The teaching responsibilities of this position include teaching 6-7 (quarter/trimester) courses per year, for major and non-majors (possibly including both undergraduate and graduate Epidemiology & Biostatistics courses), significant curriculum development, support and assessment of best-practices for Epidemiology & Biostatistics education across the department. In addition, there may be opportunities to serve on doctoral, committees; supervise students in directed and independent study; and/or contribute in various ways to the department's growth by participating in service activities. This position falls under the Lecturer with Security of Employment series at the University of California. In addition to excellent teaching and service, the position requires scholarly contributions in discipline and/or pedagogy.
The PPH at UCI is unique amongst the ten campuses within the University of California, having been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), serving a 68% diverse public health undergraduate student population. UCI's PPH has a larger and more diverse undergraduate program than almost any other program in the country, with an explicit focus on addressing health equity in research, teaching, and service at its core. The field of public health remains a critical area of inquiry regarding how to achieve optimum health and wellness across all populations, which requires training a diverse student body at the undergraduate and graduate levels. UCI was one of the first UC campuses to offer accredited undergraduate degrees in public health, a legacy that has grown to be a point of pride for the campus with an enrollment of approximately 1,300 undergraduate students, over 250 MPH/MS students, and over 90 doctoral students. The UCI-accredited MPH program has successfully trained approximately 70 students annually for 12 years to support a diverse and experienced public health workforce. In addition to transitioning to the School of Population & Public Health, the program is in the process of becoming a CEPH accredited school of public health.
Applicants must hold a PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in Epidemiology or Biostatistics, and will be expected to establish a vigorous teaching program, preferably in the area of Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics.
Essential qualifications include:
- PhD or DrPH, or equivalent degree in Epidemiology or Biostatistics, or closely relevant discipline.
- Excellent pedagogical, writing, and editing skills. Scholarly contributions in discipline and/or pedagogy is required.
- Relevant teaching and research experience including peer-reviewed publications of creative work and a passion for public health education that motivates high-quality educational experiences in laboratory, lecture and field settings.
- Postdoctoral experience and a proven teaching record at the university level are highly desirable.
- Experience in teaching critical thinking (including but not limited to epidemiology, biostatistics and study design) is preferred but not required.
- Grant writing in support of innovative instructional initiatives and modernization of education facilities id preferred.
