Position description

Stacey Nicholas Endowed Chair of Environmental and Climate Change Education (Associate/Full Rank)

The School of Education at the University of California, Irvine is carrying out a search for an Endowed Chair in environmental and climate change literacy education. This faculty position will provide intellectual leadership for the recently (re)launched ECCLPs – the Environmental and Climate Change Literacy Project(s) – a joint initiative of the University of California and California State University systems. The UCI School of Education has received seed funding and is serving as a hub for ECCLPs, partnering with community groups to create a model for promoting climate change literacy education in P-12 schools and youth organizations throughout the state of California. We are interested in candidates whose research, teaching and service commitments contribute to expanding the learning opportunities of minoritized communities in the areas of environmental and climate change literacy education, and who recognize as an imperative the centrality of environmental and racial justice in approaching climate change education. We welcome applicants from any disciplinary perspective and methodological tradition, whose scholarship focuses on environmental and climate change education and who can work collaboratively with faculty working in diverse areas including teacher education, education policy, climate science and the environment and society. A successful candidate will have experience and/or interest in engaging with local partnerships, higher education colleagues and K-12 educators to promote effective climate change education in California, which can serve as a model for other states and countries.

UC Irvine has demonstrated exemplary leadership in the area of addressing climate change and promoting environmental education. Historically, the university’s internationally recognized earth system science faculty provided academic leadership in identifying and addressing the role of chlorofluorocarbons in ozone-depletion. UCI has been celebrated as one of the nation’s most environmentally conscious campuses, including 12 consecutive years at the top of the Sierra Club’s “Cool Schools” ranking. Recently, UCI beat 900 other colleges and universities across 40 countries to earn the best score from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s sustainability rating system. Campus wide climate change initiatives include [Solutions that Scale])https://sites.ps.uci.edu/solutions/) and the UCI Climate Alliance.

The School of Education at UC Irvine, ranked as a top ten school of education by U.S. News, and No. 8 in the world globally in Education Research, has devoted substantial resources to supporting research on teaching and learning, and engaging with the diverse surrounding communities to promote research-practice partnerships and professional development opportunities for educators across the K-12 continuum. UCI is home to a vibrant, collaborative research community committed to improving science education. The Center for Research on Teacher Development and Professional Practice fosters collaboration among faculty, students, and practitioners on projects focused on a variety of aspects of teacher development and learning and on the study of teaching and teacher professional practice. The Orange County Education Advancement Network is a network of partnerships between the School of Education and local K-12 schools and non-profit organizations that engage in actionable scholarship to positively impact the diverse communities of Orange County and Southern California. The Teacher Academy offers teachers and educational leaders professional learning opportunities to improve instructional practice to advance equity and justice in K-12 contexts. The Center for Educational Partnerships hosts the UCI Science Project, a California subject matter program.

We welcome applications at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level. Applicants must have a PhD or EdD and a stellar record of scholarship, teaching and mentorship, and service commensurate to their career stage.
