Position description

The laboratories of Profs. Vasan Venugopalan and Elliot Botvinick at the University of California, Irvine anticipate multiple Postdoctoral Scholar open positions (Levels 0-IV) to work with their groups. The selected candidates will also have access to resources at the Beckman Laser Institute, which is active in the development of a broad variety of optical technologies for biomedical application. The positions provide a unique opportunity to gain experience in a multidisciplinary biomedical optics research environment. Salary will be based on the candidates’ specific skill set, track record of accomplishment, and previous experience.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or the foreign equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Optics, or related discipline with demonstrated expertise in Biophotonics. They should also have experience in optical design and instrument construction as it relates to customized laser-scanning microscopy, interferometry, and/or microbeam systems and their usage in cellular and tissue samples.

Responsibilities
• Development of a novel microscope platform integrating pulsed laser microbeams, optical interferometry, confocal and non-linear microscopy, and fluorescence lifetime imaging
• Perform experiments to validate the performance of the integrated system on cellular and artificial hydrogel-based tissues to measure cellular mechanosignaling, hydrogel stiffness, and imaging of cellular morphology and metabolism.
• Synthesis and maintenance of cell cultures and 3-D cellular hydrogels
• Utilize the integrated system to examine cellular mechanobiology in model tissue systems.

All appointments are for one year with the potential for extension dependent upon performance and funding.
