Position description

The Hematology/Oncology Division in the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine, University of California, Irvine, is recruiting for a full-time Specialist Series academic to support research projects in the research team of Principal Investigator, Dr. Wendy Cozen. This Specialist Series academic position is available immediately.

Dr. Wendy Cozen is a molecular epidemiologist with a research focus on the genetic and non-genetic etiology of hematologic neoplasms, primarily multiple myeloma and adolescent/young adult Hodgkin lymphoma, with over 240 publications and a 20+ year history of uninterrupted peer-reviewed funding. Her current R01s involve the tumor microenvironment and survival in 900 multi-ethnic young adult Hodgkin lymphoma patients (NIH 1R01CA206019) and a study biological and lifestyle risk factors for monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance in a multiethnic population (NIHR01CA260615). Recently she has begun a new research direction examining immune and other persistent abnormalities in adolescent/young adult Hodgkin lymphoma survivors.

Currently, Dr. Cozen is conducting the following research projects:
• Tumor microenvironment of Hodgkin lymphoma and influence on survival in a large multiethnic sample
• Tumor microenvironment of Hodgkin lymphoma and influence on survival in a large multiethnic sample
• Role of Epstein-Barr virus in chronic outcomes
• Determinants of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (benign multiple myeloma precursor) including infections, immune response and lifestyle
• In development: Twin study of COVID-19 responses

Primary Responsibilities:
The Specialist Series academic will provide long-term research projects support to Dr. Wendy Cozen’s research activities.

DUTIES
Work with Principal Investigator and other academic researchers to manage ongoing research projects as well as participate in literature review, data collection, data analysis and manuscript developments. Experience with the following activities will be required:
• Develop IRB, MTA and DUA applications
• Work with other sites to obtain samples and data
• Experience using data and statistical software: (at least 2): excel. SAS, STATA, R
• Some experience in data management and statistical analysis
• Purchasing
• Supervising students
• Posters and talks
• Help develop and write manuscripts and grant applications
• Oversee or conduct field work and data collection
• Learn how to make tissue microarrays
• Learn how to use digital pathology software and conduct analysis

The Specialist Series academic will also be encouraged to attend and present the results of their research at scientific conferences, participate in study meetings and interact with collaborative research groups; mentor and work with graduate and undergraduate students; develop and pursue their own research ideas; as well as develop and polish any skills and experiences that they feel will best prepare them for their career goals.

Rank and salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Initial appointments are for one year and renewal is based on availability of support.

Qualifications:
We are seeking motivated applicants who have a master’s or doctoral degree(s) in public health, epidemiology, or related field. Epidemiology or public health related work or research experience is required. The successful candidate must have a broad range of skills, including excellent written and oral communication skills, adaptability, the ability to maintain effective interactions and collaborations with other members of the team and scientific community, and organizational skills. Attention to detail and following written and verbal directions is essential. Experience of participating in data analysis, manuscript development is a plus.

Assistant Specialist - Appointees to the Assistant rank should possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five
years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization.
Associate rank - should possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Associate Specialists are normally expected to have a record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
Specialist rank - should possess a terminal degree ( or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Specialists at full rank are normally expected to have a significant record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field, professional recognition in the field, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.

• Minimum Master’s degree required
• Good biological background with basic understanding aspects of biomedicine and epidemiology including immunology, infections, epidemiology and cancer (not necessarily all)
• Experience developing IRB, MTA and DUA applications
• Experience using data and statistical software: (at least 2): excel. SAS, STATA, R
• Some experience in data management and statistical analysis
• Experience supervising students
• Experience with processing and organizing biospecimens (blood, tissue)

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working on infectious disease epidemiology/immunology including COVID-19.
• Some knowledge of global public health.
• Experience working in a lab related to public health or population-based studies.
• Experience with observational studies.
