Salary range: The base salary range for this position is: Assistant Professor $82,200-$107,700 Associate Professor $102,500-$129,300 Professor $120,200-$218,500 The posted UC salary scales set the base pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Professor and Professor of Teaching (LSOE) Series — Specialized Health Science Scales — Health Sciences Compensation Plan. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan, which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

Position description

The University of California, Irvine, Division of Thoracic Surgery is seeking a full-time academic thoracic surgeon to join as a Professor of Clinical-X Series, Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series or In-Residence Professor Series at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor Level. The preferred candidate will have the opportunity to practice with two busy full-time surgeons within a large academic center with a highly ranked NCI designated cancer center. This position will be critical to meet the new Thoracic Surgery programming requirements of UCI’s new hospital in Irvine which is planned for late 2024. The clinical responsibilities are to be a member of the team at the new hospital, UCI Medical Center in Orange and the Veterans Administration hospital in Long Beach. A dual appointment will be required.

Responsibilities include the full spectrum of adult thoracic surgical care, pre/post-surgical care, research in the field, teaching residents and medical students. The candidate should be well versed in all aspects of General Thoracic Surgery including robotic, VATS, endoscopic, and open techniques. There is no lung transplant responsibilities. We expect the successful candidate to have clinical activity, teach the trainees, and partake in research activities with an interest in basic/translational discovery or health services research.

The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the Clinical-X Series, Health Sciences Clinical Professor, and In-Residence Professor Series shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

Faculty rank and series will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Candidates should have a DO, MD or MD/ PhD with board certification / eligibility in cardiothoracic surgery and a California Medical License prior to start date. Candidates should have successfully completed a general surgery residency and a cardiothoracic surgery residency/fellowship or have completed a (I6) cardiothoracic surgery program. Demonstrated expertise in clinical and translational research is expected, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary collaborations.
